    the best - 5 stars
    Run: A Novel Review
Ann Patchett is an extraordinary writer, and "Run" is an incredible book. I read it quickly once, because the story was engrossing, and then slowly the second time, to savour the writing. I've given to several friends and relatives.
Much Better Than Originally Thought - 4 stars
    Run: A Novel Review
I started Run by Ann Patchett a year ago...but for some reason I couldn't get pass the prologue. The prologue just did nothing for me. And while I gave away tons of books during the year...I didn't give this one away. For some reason, I just believed that I would get to it during the year. I'm glad I kept it. Due to the favorable reviews expressed by BBAW participants, I decided to pick it up again. I'm glad I did because this has easily become one of my favorite books for 2008. Listed below are some of my observations about Run by Ann Patchett.
    * Themes include family, race, adoption, politics, estranged children.
    * Everyone is running from (to) something in this book.
    * The most endearing character was Kenya, the child track star.
    * I honestly didn't have a least favorite character...and even liked Sullivan...although I wish I knew more about what his demons were. He was a character that quickly appeared and could just as quickly disappear and while you would miss him...you knew that was just the nature of his character.
    * Da reminded me of Jack Kennedy. Lots of similarities...Catholic...loved politics...wanted his boys to pursue politics.
    * Uncle Sullivan...I kept hoping he would come through.
    * Tennessee...rather than disliking her and feeling contempt...I understood her and felt her angst...to be so close yet so far...but she did what was best for all of her kids. The twist with her friend was different...but that was the turning point for me regarding the ending. I already knew what was to come.
    * I had to keep reminding myself that all of this happened within 24 hours...so with that I had to accept that some of the back story was lacking and that there would be loose ends.
    * Complex issues written in a lyrical and yet simply told manner.
    * This is a book that will stay with me long after the last page was turned.
    * Overall, I rate Run 4.5/5.0 stars and highly recommend it to others.

    GREAT story! - 5 stars
    Run: A Novel Review
Tip and Teddy will steal your heart. They are two adopted boys that lose their adoptive mother when they are very young. Watch the story unfold as the birthmother comes back into the picture.

Great character development! You will really feel as if you are there!

Well-written, but not Bel Canto - 3 stars
    Run: A Novel Review
I enjoyed this book, especiallyu its evocation of Boston in winter and its well-developed, sypathetic characters. But somehow tension never develops and the story seems strangely flat. I found myself empathizing intellectually, but not emotionally. My head was engaged, but my heart felt unmoved. Bel Canto felt altogethr more compelling. But this is a good read, with lively, clear, and readable prose.
Just couldn't get into this book - 2 stars
    Run: A Novel Review
I have read other works by Ann Patchett and enjoyed them, but Run left me as cold as the wintery environment in which it is set. It is the story of a Boston politician who has two adopted African American sons, and what happens after they inadvertently discover their birth mother and biological sister. The characters were well drawn but their story did not engage me as I had hoped it would and it was a real slog to get to the unsatisfying ending of the book. I would Patchett's prior novel Bel Canto or her very moving memoir, Truth and Beauty, over this novel.
