Get Out of My Yard Review

I am a huge Satriani fan, and like most people interested in this album am a long time guitar shredder. However, I am very picky when it comes to instrumental guitar albums, quite frankly most of it does not stand up compositionally.
This album is different. Its got a sense of humor, it blazes, its got range. Did I mention it blazes!? (Imagine what would happen if Yngwie Malmsteen started taking himself less seriously and started exploring other musical forms.)
Paul is playing in a power trio, the tone is honest and dry with very little production tricks. He uses odd time signatures and non-traditional song structures. This is progressive, jazzy, but it still just rocks.
The only thing that lets the album down a bit is that there are a few tracks in the middle that arent as compelling as some of the other standout tracks. This gives guitar fans more to chew on, but the album does not flow as well as it could. (This is like an "extended realese" version of your favorite DVD with some scenes that wouldnt normally make it to the theatre.) IMO, he should have dropped "Marine Layer", "Twelve Twelve", and "Haydn Symphony 88".
The rest is brilliant.

People ask me "who is the best guitarist, who is your favorite???" I have always had a hard time there. I enjoy so many different styles. I have some favorites, sure, but there are players I see in local clubs that are amazing as well..... The other day I grabbed this CD off the shelf, took it into the car and was absolutley blown away. Simply put, Paul Gilbert is one of my favorites and one of the very "best" guitar players that ever walked this planet. Buy this CD, sit back and enjoy. It is really exceptionally versatile and awesome!!!!! It's so much more than simply another METAL instrumental [shredder - I hate that label....], it spans styles and is totally unique.....GET IT!!!!!!!!!

What can I say, I want more! Paul is extremely talented as this CD testifies. The songs are different and do not wear the listener out.
If you enjoy instrumentals by Joe Satriani or Steve Vai I think you will find this CD is very similar.

Simply put, Paul Gilbert is nothing short of the man. All of his songs are inspired by something and reflect his amazing creativity. For every song he writes, he draws a cartoon and writes a poem about what he wrote. His music is not only impressive (he's an awesome shredder), but very musical and very inspiring to listen to. As a guitarist, this CD has added greatly to my motivation to play, to better myself as a musician and to expand my musical knowledge. He doesn't even need lyrics to tell his stories - the music says it all. Paul has given new depth to my respect for the guitar as an instrument of music.
