Alexander Markov Review

Alexander Markov's 1989 recital of the Paganini Caprices is beyond outstanding - which makes it rather curious that his discography is apparently so limited. I'm on the younger side - age 31 - and have listened to CD recordings of the Caprices for almost 20 years now. I found almost all of them to be very ho-hum - there are many individually nice recordings of each Caprice - Milstein's incredible #5 and #13, Shlomo Mintz's #12, Midori's #9, and so forth. While the videography is often weird and distracting, Markov offers a fresh, invigorating look at each of the 24 "entries", taking incredible technical and musical risks, but always succeeding. While the Caprices will always be "The Paganini Caprices", Markov offers unexpected interpretative twists to almost all of them. I would have given anything to hear this recital live, but thankfully, I will always be able to watch this splendid DVD.

Are you looking for a DVD performance of the complete 24 Caprices of Paganini? This is the only one that I know of, and it is a knockout! Markov is a fantastic violinist who manages to infuse these finger-busters with real musical life. To be sure, this is a video production. Some of the scenes are before a live audience, but some are not, and I can't be sure if single caprices are filmed entirely without editing and retakes. But that is not a problem. This is violin acrobatics of a very tall order, and I for one am more than willing to put up with the occasional clever cinematography (multiple images, etc.) that the director seemed to feel added something to the film. If you love the violin, GET THIS NOW! Bravo Alexander!! Ten stars!

Too Good To Be True! -

All 24 Caprices, back-to-back, one after another. On the original intended instrument. No reading! No cheesy cocktail lounge piano accompaniment! All by himself! Played with passion! And he does it LIVE! Even the audience gets it ...
This live concert DVD will appeal to non-musicians just as much as it does to musicians. Mr. Markov not only learned all 24 caprices ... he internalized them, and imbued them with heart and soul. He delivers this challenging repertoire the way it was meant to be ... playing the music because above all, he loves it. Interpreted, yes, but with total respect for the composer. And I would say his interpretation is minimal. Violin virtuosos may nitpick a note here and there, but so what, its LIVE! I would wager that even ol' "St. Nic" would not play them the same way twice.
With this performance, Mr. Markov goes a long way towards breathing life back into the classical music scene, which was lost when the universities left improvisation to rot in the gutter. (They didn't keep classical music alive, they mummified it.) And here is a DVD that one can pull out year after year and savor for the rest of one's days. The richness of Paganini comes through and you will hear something new every time. A "product" like this is long overdue. Thank you, Mr. Markov!

Performing all of the 24 caprices in one concert is the ultimate test for violin mastery and of course, stamina. Markov conquered the caprices with satanic virtuosity and presented a good visualization of how Paganini would play.

The DVD says that he is the one who can plays all 24 pieces.
I want to see his hand holding the bow clearlier.
I think there is a controversy on how to hold the violin bow.
Sometimes the camera man aim to incorrect scences.
Somtimes the editors let his imagination go too far from the fact.
I do not need their crazy imaginations, for I am even crazier.
I need the true and clear pictures of every single moment of the event.
