The piano drowns out the violin throughout. One has to wonder who emgineered this and why.
It is not possible, as one reviewer suggests, that it's Midori's fault. There are separate microphones and separate dials where the engineer reads sound levels of each. I am a pianist and like to hear the piano clearly, but this recording was ruined by the imbalance. I would recommend later Midori recordings over this one. It is not easy for Asians to break into the big time, so it is a testatment to Midori, I suppose, that they publish and sell this botched recording. I suspect there are other Asian artists who would become known and loved by Wedterners if obstacles like this were not put in their way. - An American fan of Midori |

I had looked forward to purchasing this DVD for quite a while. I was privileged to be in the audience at Carnegie Hall when this recital was filmed on Oct. 21st,1990. What a splendid event, and what glorious music making. The Midori-Live at Carnegie Hall DVD captures a brilliant musician marvelously displaying her extraordinary gifts in a program that features works by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Beethoven, Chopin, Ravel and Debussy, among others. I was particulary taken with the Mozart, which Midori played with effortless charm.
Despite that fact that others have taken exception with that sound quality of this DVD, I can find no difficulties at all in this respect. The sound seems quite good to me, with Midori & pianist Robert MacDonald in excellent balance. Both artists display exceptional technique & poise on stage. If there one place where I might take exception, it would be with the video transfer. The picture is ever so slightly grainy, but this does not distract any great deal from one enjoying the performance. This is a wonderful recital DVD, which I would recommend to anyone. It is a delightful record of one of the most thrilling classical recitals that I have ever attended. Don't hesitate about adding this one to your DVD collection. It is a joy to experience! |

Some might say Midori's understanding of the music she plays is not quite as profound as what one expects from great musicians. Some might not like to watch her play because it is too tensed physically, especially her bow arm. But none will be able to dismiss the fact that Midori is nothing short of amazingly incredible. I am never a really big fan of Midori but I can't help but admiring her. This DVD is absolutely fascinating to watch. On contrary to some reviewers' opinion, the program includes some of the most challenging pieces in violin solo literature.
However, I'm not too sure the balance problem between the violin and piano was the engineer's fault. Midori doesn't really have a very big sound in live concerts. |

...FIRE THE SOUND ENGINEER!...the recording is poor...simply put, you can barely hear the violin...the violin sounds like a mosquito buzzing over the freight train of sound coming from the piano...I don't think it's Midori's fault -- she appears to be pushing the violin as far it can go...Heifetz used to lean on recording engineers to get the piano pushed further into the background and someone should have done that here. |
