Though not a staunch Whitesnake fan, I do like lots of their older stuff and had hoped for at least a few songs that were keepers. I mean, really, when you've had a decade to put pencil to paper you'd think some well written tunes would be on the way. But such is not the case here. All the tracks are just bland, generic R&R that must not have taken long at all to write and crank out at the studio. Not a single keeper in the bunch. This album ranks about the same as the Coverdale-Page attempt (which was really not that good). The claim that this album would spawn classics like "Here I go again" is just laughable. It just doesn't seem that DC put much effort into the whole thing and just went through the motions. "Good To Be Bad" might make for some background noise while you're doing whatever mindless task, but it's not the album you'll want to whip out those expensive Grados for and really listen to. |

A very surprising CD. Great music throughout. Very consistent. One of the best CDs of new music from an 80s era band in a while. My only complaint, if you can call it that, is that the CD lacks that one song that will stick in your memory 20 years from now, a la "Still of the Night" or "Slow An' Easy." But a great CD -- if you like rock music, definitely check it out. |

After reading all the glowing reviews I was prepared to be blown away by this album but in fact am feeling a bit underwhelmed. It has it's good points, but it's not the masterpiece I was led to expect.
First the good... this album rocks. Hard. If you want a good kick in the pants first thing in the morning you could do a lot worse than this. The production is decent, although it suffers from the overcompression that's endemic to modern recording. Coverdale's band of hired guns displays superb musicmanship, and as for the man himself... I won't say he sounds as good as he did twenty years ago, but his pipes are still in pretty good shape for all that. The other side of the coin... the songs are decent. Not much more than that, just decent. They're competently crafted, but they consistently fail to be very memorable or interesting. Anyone who's comparing this to the snake of old has got to be kidding themselves; there isn't a single track on here that I would directly compare musically to the likes of Crying In The Rain, Still Of The Night, or Till The Day I Die. As far as the lyrics are concerned... well, Mr. Coverdale needs to get divorced, start drinking again, and have sex with some random groupies or something. This "happy man deeply in love" crap does not become him at all. He mostly just comes off sounding sappy and a bit retarded. Overall this is a respectable effort, but in no way is it a second coming. After a decade of silence I expected something downright spectacular. |

MISSION: To discover signs of meaning in ancient cultures inhabiting the current waste-planet earth Hey Zork, here's another fragment of a some sort of thin square case. I guess we'll keep it for an exibit. It has the letters Oz..and the words Black Rain, which may refer to localized catastrophic events we already know take place before The Event that laid waste to all life on earth. Good one Zog, I guess it's something to add to our earlier find-something about a glimmering, no "sparkling" animal that had no sense of hearing. I suppose that was some sort of icon, maybe a quasi-pagean god of one of the latter cultures. Oh, well, another piece of the puzzle... Zork!!! Look at this! It appears to be some sort of time capsule! What does this say? Hmmm...(Zork, clearing the dust off a circular plaque) It says YEAR 2008, ROCK LIVES, WS. That's all. Hmmm...whatever. Anyway, Zog...Zog? What was that? All I can hear is some kind of powerful distortion, relentless pounding, and it seems to be overwhelming me...hard...to...breathe... Zog do you feel the ground shaking? Holy smokes, ground to ship, ground to ship! Captain, get down here! We've got something definitely heavy on our hands. AHHHHHHHHH!!!! ***heavy as S, with fat, bigger than life sound, and that GREAT Snake you LOVE--all crashing into the new millenium GET IT NOW!!! STOP READING AND GET IT NOW!!! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! WHAT!? STOP GRABBING YOUR SNAKE AND GET SOME SNAKE THAT'S GONNA GRAB YOU! |
