From Amazon.com:
If you're new to Raheem DeVaughn but have caught wind that he calls himself an R&B-hippie-neosoul-rock star, you've got a right to be skeptical. It's hard enough to hold down an advanced degree of R&B cred these days without ratcheting up the pressure by insisting on being a hippie and a rock star, too. And despite the best efforts of Jill Scott and Angie Stone, neo-soul seems to have sputtered out somewhere among the back rooms of Maxwell's '90s-era urban hang suite. But DeVaughn's sophomore disc will hang your skepticism by its ankles and make it squirm. The D.C. singer and contemporary of Erykah Badu and Common is a gifted guy who knows how to work a lyric and never met a melody he couldn't set swiftly into motion. The best evidence comes by way of the radio-ready "Woman," a sweet-natured thumper as relatable as a crooked smile, but it's backed by pop-scraping tracks including the Gnarls Barkley-like "Energy," featuring Outkast's Big Boi, and the daydreamy and fully irresistible "Butterflies." DeVaughan simultaneously sounds like every soul singer who has raised bumps on your arms and none of them at all, which is to say he's an artist no matter what banner he flies. His mission is to move you, not just fill the space around the speakers. And in song after song here, he makes it happen. --Tammy La Gorce

Love Behind The Melody Review

|

I expected more from this album. I decided to give it atleast 3 stars because he was generous enough to put 17 songs on this album, which is far more than what these artist put out these days, so I commend him for doing that. So back to the quality and not the quantity. Most of the songs are a little boring to me. I think he is a great artist but on this album it seems like he is trying to be like Marvin Gaye sprinkled with a dash of R. Kelly and a pinch of Musiq Soulchild.
The best songs are:

Love Behind The Melody Review

Contrary to most of the reviews, I thought that "Love Behind the Melody" was better than "The Love Experience." As a huge neo-soul fan, I think that Raheem Devaughn is one of the most sincere, hungry, and soulful neo-soul artists in the game right now. His talent really shows on this new cd. With timeless classics such as: "Desire", "Marathon", and "Empty" he truly outdoes himself. These songs speak for themself. The interludes are even amazing, especially "Midnight" and "Woman I Desire." Unfortunately, there are a few songs that I can afford to skip over like "Mo Better" (maybe it's because it's over 7 minutes long!) and "Four Letter Word" but maybe other people actually enjoy them. The other tracks on this cd are amazing, which makes this cd a classic. I truly adore Raheem's music and have met him when he came to NJ. His next album REALLY needs to include "Prototype" and "Text Messages."
Kim's Top 5 Tracks:
1. Midnight (Have you heard this backwards??? Its amazing!!!)
2. Marathon
3. Desire
4. Woman I Desire
5. Customer

Love Behind The Melody Review

I was introduced to Raheem DeVaughn when I heard the song "Guess Who Loves You More". Beautiful Song that became one of my favorites in the year 2004.I finally heard another track "Believe", which was a nice slow jam and Seductive you would Feel as if he wrote the song for you and finally in 2005 we were blessed with Raheem DeVaughn debut CD entitled The Love Experience. Since, he had personal experiences to be able to relate to, he had a better understanding of what love was. My other favorite tracks ended up being "Ask Yourself". This CD remained the Best Cd i Was recomended by Amazon.com !
