Best since Shake Your Moneymaker, November 26, 2008

I have never been a huge Black Crowes fan. I like them, I own a couple of their albums, but definitely would not call myself a diehard. Last week I went out and picked up "Warpaint" based on a suggestion from a friend, who IS a huge Crowes fan. I didn't expect much but after three listens I have to say..."Warpaint" blows me away. An absolutely fabulous release! It rocks, it slows down, it rocks again. Not a bad tune on it. I see the reviews on here giving 1, 2 or 3 stars and I just don't get it. This is their best release in over 15 years.
My favorites are "Daughters Of The Revolution" (what a great tune to kick off the album), "Wonded Bird" and "Locust Street" (I once lived on a Locust Street in Ohio, so this song is near and dear to my heart).
I'm telling you, don't listen to what the 1 and 2 star critics say. Pick this one up and decide for yourself. This is one of the best releases of 2008. I know---I'm gushing. But damn this CD is good.

Completely Blown Away, November 9, 2008

I consider myself a casual BC fan. I saw the Crowes doing an acoustic set on Palladium (HD Music channel) and it got me re-interested in them. I came to Amazon.com and listened to a few samples and from what I heard, it sounded great! So I went and bought the album, popped it in, and from beginning to end was BLOWN AWAY. I have not heard ROCK MUSIC in YEARS!!! THIS was what I have been missing all these years. Oh Josephine is one of the most soulful songs I have heard. Locust St. is an awesome low-key song, and when you throw these songs on here with songs like Evergreen and Walk Believer Walk, you have the perfect rock album. Just, incredible. If you are a fan of ROCK, not this crap that is being put out these days, but true rock.....especially southern rock.....BUY THIS ALBUM!!!

Very, very much on top of their game, September 25, 2008

This album of the venerable BLACK CROWES shows an extremely mature band totally on top of their game. The Black Crowes have always followed the raunchy guitar driven rock mold of the early seventies greats and have done so with more than exciting results. Never have they struck me as so incredibly fearless, so incredibly certain of themselves. This album carries flavors of what are in my humble opinion some of the best records made during my lifetime. There certainly is some of the fearlessness, the almost-sounds-like-a-demo-ness of the Stones Exile on Main Street. Matter of fact, the track God's Got It could have been included in (LP-) side 3 of Exile's original double-LP-set. But I also hear flavors of the first Chris Jagger LP, of Ronnie Woods better solo-work, of the Family.
But what most strikes me when listening (again and again) to Warpaint is the almost arrogant not-in-controlness-equals-total-in-controlness atmosphere. Almost as if they released an album of first takes, with the occasional slip-up here and there, but with all the enthusiasm and FUN and raw musicality this would bring.
Chapeau, gentlemen. Your album has immediately made it to the 'deserted island' list. And thank you, for countless hours of decibel-filled enjoyment.
Teye
And BTW what f***ing great guitar tones!

The time off did them good (4.5 stars) , September 23, 2008

The Black Crowes' seventh studio album, Warpaint, clearly shows that the time off did them good. Before this, it appeared by their output that the band wasn't sure who they were. Their albums bounced from a loose rock band in the spirit of the Stones to more of a jam band and then to a straight out hard rock band. On Warpaint, the Black Crowes have become just a great American band that can take a variety of genres and create a sound that is truly their own. Musically, this is their best album and their songs are at their most consistent. While there is nothing here as catchy or memorable as "She Talks to Angels", "Jealous Again", or "Remedy", tracks like the countryish "Josephine", the ballad "There's Gold in Them Hills", and the woodsy "Whoa Mule" are among their best work. The opening "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution" is a great dirty rocker while "Walk Believer Walk" has this cool chopping rhythm and tons and tons of slide guitar from Luther Dickinson. "Locust Street" is another strong melancholy ballad while "Evergreen" has a sick groove. "We Who See the Deep" has another cool groove with a riff to go along with it. "Movin' on Down the Line" and "Wounded Bird" are strong rockers as the former starts out with an eerie organ line before building in momentum while the latter is driven by more of Dickinson's killer slide work. Finally, "God's Got It" is a bluesy shuffle that works very well. All told, Warpaint is a return to form for the Black Crowes and you could argue that it is their best album. Highly recommended.

FINALLY! , August 2, 2008

Perhaps the greatest CD of all time, The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, was the second by the Black Crows and therefore set them with an insurmoutnable task of ever creating a better CD. Amorica was quite solid even if it was a bit too 'doctored' with all of the studio alterations. But after that, the Crows seem to settle into some kind of 'We paid our dues, now we can just sell plastic discs'.
WELL, brothers and sisters, the Black Crows are BACK!
Warpaint is phenomenal! It is what we want from the Crows,
Southern,
Soul,
Rock,
Roll!
Robinson has finally gotten back in touch with his inner Shaman, and he rattles the lyrics out with syncopated elegance like a rattle snake Rattle. The piano makes you feel that you are in an old saloon, and the percusion is SO FUL. The guitars are a bit toned down relative to other Crow's CDs, but HELL, its so FFF'n worth it that I dont think anyone will complain. I could go into what songs I think are the best (Movin on down the Line), but I wont try to preach to you about what you like best of the Crows.
Buy it! Its better than 3 snakes, Lion, Shake $, By Ur Side, AND Amorica!!!!!
Its alright Brothers, its alright Sisters
