Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition Review

This is an amazingly well-polished game. The Windows edition is as smooth as the original for PS3. With the bonus exclusive PC missions, I can't imagine how it can get any better.
Clean installation, clean update. So far I haven't found any bugs or glitches.
I can imagine it won't run very well on older machines. I recently upgraded my PC to 3.1Ghz Dual Core with 4Gb RAM and I have no problem running this game on maximum settings.
The widescreen display feels very comfortable. I have no trouble seeing all the details on my 19" LCD.
My only advice would be to get some kind of gamepad for Windows. I bought Logitech Rumblepad 2 Vibration Feedback Gamepad, since it's nearly impossible to accommodate a console game's control scheme on a PC. Playing it with a gamepad feels exactly like playing it on a PS3, but without the heavy console price.
My only regret is that I waited until recently to buy this game. This game was a great buy even at its full price. Now that they dropped the price, it's a steal. The average 3 stars it's getting here is completely unfair. It's not a frag fest for sure - it's more suitable to the thinking man or woman. If you like RPGs, stealth combat, sandbox-style exploration, and history of the crusades, this will be one of the best games you have ever played. Now I want a sequel.

READ THE "M" RATING, DON'T BUY THIS FOR YOUR KIDS UNTIL YOU PLAY IT FOR YOURSELF. THIS GAME CAN BE VERY BRUTAL-EVEN WITHOUT GORE. GOOD PARENTS SCREEN THEIR CHILDREN'S MEDIA UNTIL THEIR CHILDREN SCREEN IT THEMSELVES, BE A GOOD PARENT.
IN SUMMARY:
-Great voice acting
-Good city navigation
-Some fun fights
-Deceptive about open endedness
-Bad control scheme
-Simplistic storyline that rags on most western religions
-Deceptive about AI, it's very simple and scripted
-No destructible environments.
-Unusually high system requirements
Pros:
-Building climbing is fairly fun,
-Some swordfights are movielike,
-Voice acting is great!
-His 'jump shank' attack is just ridiculously awesome.
Cons:
-This isn't nearly as open as it says it is, the game is entirely scripted with no chance of random, interesting things happening. The game description leads you to believe otherwise. The scripting is fairly decent though, so only -1/2
-The controls are console-ified, meaning you 'lock on' and 'fire'. This would be tolerable and only a half star off, but the lock on system is moody at best when you need it. -1
-The storyline is very stereotypical. Without spoiling it, it throws mud at every religion to the point they felt they had to have a disclaimer in the game. (no deduction for this)
-The AI isn't half as good as they say.
-The enemies respawn. -1
-Despite having no physics, scripted paths for all AI (try kicking 'em down a ladder, they come right back up for more) and only 110 maximum NPCs on screen at a time, this game requires a dual core processor. This is due entirely to sloppy programming and lack of scalability. If crysis can run on a single core, then this should too. -whatever's left
All in all, this game lasted me 15 hours over a week, most of it done while watching TV. It simply does not live up to the legacy that other PC games set, one of excellent developer content and easy user extensibility.
This game had a lot of work being put into how cinematic it was. If this game was advertised as such, I would have rated it higher for what it is, instead of what they claim it to be. If I order a steak and get a hamburger, and am told it is a steak, I'm going to rate it accordingly-as a bad steak.
Otherwise, this game is a good buy for a linear, cinematic style of gameplay.

The game has awesome graphics but is redundant and a little slow at times. Overall it is ok and not a game that I would play through more than once.

Decent game with wasted potential -

Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition Review

Assassins Creed has alot of things going for it. The graphics are superb, and the freedom to climb and jump on just about everything makes the game revolutionary. Unfortunately AC doesn't live up to it's full potential.
The biggest flaw with AC are its assassinations. There is little to no strategy involved, its pretty much a straight forward hack and slash kinda game. Even the melee combat, while visually cool, is pretty easy once you learn to counter attack. In fact most of the game is not very challenging at all. I would have much preferred a little more dept to assassinations, AC should have taken some notes from the Hitman series for that.
While the graphics are great, they do come at a price. You need a decent machine to run the game at an acceptable frame rate. I would not recommend trying to play the game on minimum system requirements.
The controls are a little too clunky. I appreciate Ubisoft attempting to break the mold and do something different here, but the controls need to be simplified. A gamepad is recommended tho it's still possible to play with just the mouse and keyboard.
Is Assassins Creed worth playing? Yes. Is it fun? Yes... at least for a little while. There is potential greatness with AC that just was not taken advantage of. I can only hope Ubisoft learns those lessons for its sequel's.
